From 24 to 25 July 2025, the African Transitional Justice Research Coalition gathered at the Newlands Southern Sun Hotel in Cape Town for an important meeting on memory, education, and the African Union Transitional Justice Policy (AUTJP).
At a time when authoritarianism, historical denialism, and democratic backsliding are on the rise, we focused on how unresolved histories of violence continue to shape political and social realities across Africa. Discussions explored practical strategies for promoting memory and education about past atrocities, as well as how the AUTJP can be used as a tool to hold states accountable for achieving sustainable peace, justice, and democratic order.
A heartfelt thank you to all who made the success of this gathering possible.
This was not just a conversation, but a reaffirmation of the importance of confronting the past to protect the future. By keeping memory-work alive and strengthening civil society’s voice, we move closer to a continent rooted in accountability, resilience, and lasting peace.
